Avalanche is a Layer 1 blockchain and smart contract platform that launched in September 2020. Its native cryptocurrency is AVAX, which is used to pay transaction fees and to help secure the network. The platform was built by Ava Labs, an American company co-founded by computer scientist Emin Gun Sirer, who came to the project from academic research on distributed systems. Avalanche set out to offer a fast, scalable base layer for building decentralized applications.
The network runs on the Avalanche consensus protocol, first described in a May 2018 whitepaper published under the pseudonym "Team Rocket." It is a proof-of-stake design, so validators stake AVAX to take part in confirming transactions rather than competing through mining. The consensus method is the project's main technical claim to fame: it is built to reach agreement quickly across many validators, which is meant to give the network fast transaction finality.
What sets Avalanche apart structurally is that its primary network is not one chain but three that work together. The Exchange Chain (X-Chain) handles asset transfers, the Contract Chain (C-Chain) runs smart contracts, and the Platform Chain (P-Chain) coordinates validators. Splitting these jobs across purpose-built chains is how Avalanche aims to keep each part efficient, with the C-Chain serving as the home for the apps and contracts most users interact with.
In practice, Avalanche is used as a foundation for decentralized finance apps, token projects, and other on-chain programs that developers deploy on the C-Chain. The platform competes in the same space as other smart contract chains, where the pitch usually comes down to speed and low cost while supporting many applications at once. Its three-chain layout and custom consensus are the features the project leans on to make that case.
Avalanche arrived after the first wave of smart contract platforms, entering a market where the ground rules were already set by earlier chains. Its place in that market rests on the technical bet behind it: that a tailored consensus protocol and a split-chain design can handle the demands of a busy network better than a single general-purpose chain. AVAX is the token that ties the system together, paying for its use and rewarding the validators who keep it running.
